There is a lot happening around Sioux Falls this week, exactly how we like it.

The corn maze is back, local schools are making some changes to the way students are tested, and one downtown restaurant is putting a fun twist on weekend dining with tableside sushi. We've also got mini golf, live music, food trucks, cocktails, and plenty of other reasons to get out of the house. Consider this your reminder that summer isn't quite finished just yet.

🌽 The 7-acre corn maze reopens Friday

The Gist: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort just outside Brandon is opening its seasonal 7-acre corn maze on Friday, Aug. 28. This year's design is patriotic, tied to the America 250 celebration. Admission includes the jumping pillow, a 9-hole mini golf round, and add-ons like tie-dye, gem mining, and laser tag.
Why It Matters: It's the first real fall thing on the metro calendar and a low-key gem for families looking to trade the pool schedule for a hayride and a corn maze. Check the schedule for Moonlight Maize nights and Mutts in the Maze later this fall.
🎒 Fewer tests, more class time this fall
The Gist: Starting with first day of school, the Sioux Falls School District is trimming its assessment schedule after a year-long staff review. Elementary students will see fewer K-2 mid-unit math quizzes, no spring MAP tests in grades 3-5, and new common writing and reading rubrics. Middle schoolers drop the spring MAP altogether and get shorter class-length summative tests.
Why It Matters: A committee of 42 teachers, administrators, and the local teachers' union president spent months trimming what they called redundant or misused tests. The goal is more time actually teaching, less time proctoring.

🍣 An Italian haunt rolling tableside sushi

322 E 8th St, Sioux Falls
R Wine Bar & Kitchen balances Florence flair with Midwestern warmth, courtesy of owners Riccardo and Marybeth Tarabelsi. Beyond the sharp pasta limone, rich gorgonzola steak, and thirty-plus wine options, the weekend rhythm shifts delightfully: tableside sushi service on Friday and Saturday evenings, live music three nights a week, and a breezy patio overlooking the neighborhood.
It’s a magnetic downtown spot where signing a cork for the wall is pure tradition.

🏴☠️ Neon glow meets crisp autumn evenings

1503 E 10th St, Sioux Falls
Pirates Plunder, a 9,000-square-foot blacklight mini golf course complete with 17 arcade games, collectible card packs, and prizes like authentic Labubus and Squishmallows. Groups arrive sporting tie-dye or Goodwill neon finds that POP under the lights. Hole 16 is a prime spot for a hole-in-one. Open late on weekends.
The chill is about to settle in, making indoor hangouts look better by the day!
