The Gist: Great Plains Zoo and Butterfly House & Aquarium are kicking off a month of autumn fun on Sept. 26, starting with Black-footed Ferret Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. That same evening features an Oktoberfest celebration with live music, local beer sampling, and Bavarian snacks. The spooky lineup continues into October with a 21+ Adult Boo night on Oct. 10, the family-friendly ZooBoo from Oct. 15-18, and Spooky Seas on Oct. 24.

The Gist: Downtown Sioux Falls is teaming up with the South Dakota Pork Producers Council to host the Downtown Pork Showdown all month long, running from October 1 to October 31, 2026. Local restaurants will go head-to-head with unique pork entrées, giving food lovers a chance to taste creative dishes and rate them on flavor, presentation, and originality.

Why It Matters: Celebrating "Pork-tober" promotes dining out and exploring downtown kitchens while supporting regional producers. Plus, every vote helps crown the People’s Choice Champion, letting diners decide who gets the ultimate culinary bragging rights.
