🛶 Big Sky vibes and sourdough crusts

With its lodge-inspired warmth and "Big Sky" spirit, MacKenzie River feels like a high-altitude escape right in the heart of downtown.

It’s an easy favorite for a grounded date night, especially with their upcoming Valentine’s special: three courses for two. Whether you’re sharing the sweet-and-savory Pineapple Chutney Flatbread or a signature sourdough pizza, the atmosphere remains unhurried and intentionally cozy.

It’s the kind of neighborly spot where the local hospitality is as crisp as the crust, making it a reliable pick for a relaxed mid-winter celebration.

💐 A different kind of seasonal bouquet

The Great Outdoor Store is celebrating the month with a playful twist on traditional flowers. Inside the historic Rock Island Depot, the staff suggests gear and goodies for every kind of love.

These local favorites include colorful Hydro Flasks and cozy layers that last much longer than standard roses. It is a warm spot to find unique gifts while supporting a small business that has served the community since 1983.

🥪 Local flavor: Southside Slamwich returns

The Gist: The 3rd Annual Southside Slamwich is here for the month of February. Sixteen neighborhood restaurants are serving up unique creations, ranging from traditional brisket and pastrami to global flavors like shawarma and banh mi. You can join the fun by trying these sandwiches and rating them on a simple five star scale through the event website.

🏒 Celebrating Our Local Hockey Legends

The Gist South Dakota Hockey has selected six dedicated individuals for the 2026 Hall of Fame class. These inductees represent local associations in Huron, Watertown, Rapid City, Mitchell, and Aberdeen. They will be honored for their contributions as players, coaches, officials, and builders during a special banquet this April in Sioux Falls.

Why It Matters This honor recognizes the neighbors and mentors who have worked hard to grow the sport of hockey and build a stronger community for our local athletes.

🐾 Meet Callie: Our Resilient Sunbather

Callie is a six year old liver and white Bulldog mix who truly embodies grace. Weighing a sturdy 61 pounds, this athletic girl is a master of commands and a champion snuggler.

She is house-trained, crate-trained, and enjoys the company of cats, though she prefers being the leading lady when it comes to other dogs. Currently thriving in her local foster home, Callie is looking for a steady hand and a warm couch. Her adoption fee is $300.
