We always love weeks that mix big community news with great local discoveries. This Scoop has both.

You'll find a summer reprieve at the pools, a new locally owned shop in the Steel District, longtime neighborhood favorites worth revisiting, and enough events to keep your calendar full through next week. Thanks for spending a few minutes with us, and have a great week!

🏊 The pool announcement, and the re-announcement

The Gist: The City announced Friday afternoon that all outdoor pools would close Sunday, Aug. 9. Within hours, and after community pushback, the city updated the closing date to Aug. 16, giving everyone one more week of outdoor swimming. The 2026 season welcomed more than 167,000 visitors, up roughly 25% over 2025, a jump partly driven by the reopening of the newly rebuilt McKennan Wading Pool.

Why It Matters: Pool closures are the unofficial end of summer in Sioux Falls. Getting a week back turns a hard Sunday into a soft one.

What's Next: Swimming Gone to the Dogs is set for Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Terrace Park from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with a second event Aug. 13 at Laurel Oak. Free, up to two dogs per person, vaccinations required.

⛳ A golf shop just opened in the Steel District

The Gist: Final Drive, a locally owned golf shop from Sioux Falls' Peter Gotner, just opened at 151 E. Fourth Place. The shop sells new, used, and vintage golf gear and apparel, with a golf simulator, regripping, and laser engraving services planned for down the road.

Why It Matters: Late summer is prime tune-up-your-clubs season, and a specialty golf shop from a local owner is the kind of independent tenant that changes the character of a new district. Also, someone in Sioux Falls collects vintage golf gear now.

🥙 Forty-four years of Greek classics

1512 W 41st St, Sioux Falls

Kosta Sengos of Nick's Gyros continues the legacy his family started in 1982, keeping Sioux Falls well-fed with sunny Greek staples.

The shaved beef-and-lamb gyros (wrapped in warm pita with daily house-made tzatziki, ripe tomatoes, and onions) deliver that bright, crisp flavor late summer calls for. Opt for the spicy version layered with Sriracha, or grab a late-night fix at their brand-new East 10th Street drive-thru on weekend evenings.

🍵 Eastside Sanctuary for Mindful Rest

5001 Grant St, Sioux Falls

Locals Jillian and Megan created a complete reset spot on the east side in May 2025. Alchemy House combines a tea bar with local coffee from The Breaks, Songbird kombucha, and Cedar Falls roasts, with a plant-filled Greenhouse perfect for working.

Beyond infrared saunas and salt rooms, August brings guided Yoga Nidra, a 75-minute Restorative Yoga session on August 16, and a Sacred Play movement gathering on August 22.
