☀️ Summer Fridays return to SAM Buses

The Gist Sioux Area Metro is bringing back its Summer Friday Program, offering free fares on fixed-route buses and paratransit services every Friday. The initiative kicks off tomorrow, May 22, and runs through September 4, 2026. All community riders are eligible for the free rides, though standard fares will still apply for SAM On-Demand services.

Why It Matters: This is a fantastic excuse to leave the car keys at home and explore our city's vibrant summer events without worrying about gas or parking. By clearing the financial hurdle, Justin Jellinek and the transit team are making it easier for neighbors to connect and experience the city's newly redesigned network.

🪖 Memorial Day Service at SD Veterans Cemetery

The Gist: The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will hold its annual Memorial Day program on Monday, May 25, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery just outside Sioux Falls. Starting at noon, the ceremony will feature a keynote address from SDDVA Secretary Jeremiah Schneider at the 60-acre grounds. Cemetery Director Erin Brown is inviting all community members and families to attend the event at 25965 477th Avenue.

Why It Matters: As the largest formal Memorial Day observance in the Sioux Falls metro, this is a beautiful space for us to gather and honor those who served. On-site seating is limited, so you'll want to toss a lawn chair in the trunk before you head out.

🛹 Barbecue served with a side of skate culture

The long weekend move is hitting The Smoked Culture early on Saturday since they’re closed Sunday and Monday. Located in the former Nutty’s space near 49th and Westport, this spot serves Texas-style brisket alongside family-recipe sides.

Grab a three-meat plate with pork belly popsicles on the sun-soaked patio, or grab a pint of their wild banana-bacon "Hunka Hunka" ice cream collaboration. It’s effortless, full-flavored, and exactly where you want to spend a late-May afternoon.

Ready to get the backyard grill ready for the season? Check out the sprawling meat counters at Dakota Butcher to make the preparation seamless!

The clean, bright local shop is stocked with premium cuts, including a specialized holiday grilling box that bundles ribeyes, pork chops, chicken grillers, chuck patties, and all-beef hot dogs for under two hundred dollars. You can also mix and match fresh brats or grab regional cheeses and ice cream for the lake.
